Layering light: pendant, lamp and glow

One bright ceiling light flattens a room. Three or four softer sources, set at different heights, bring it back to life.

Lighting

A single central light tends to flatten a room, leaving hard shadows and bright surfaces. Several softer sources at different heights make the same space feel more comfortable.

Think in three layers

Use a general layer for moving around, a task layer for reading or cooking, and a soft layer for evening. A pendant, a floor lamp and a small table lamp can cover all three in a living room.

Plan it early

Sockets and switches are far easier to move before the decorating starts. Mark where the furniture will go first, then place the lighting around it, and put the soft layers on dimmers where you can.
